MF18 Professional UAV Antenna Tracking System — Automatic Directional Gimbal for BVLOS Long-Range Drone Operations

UAV Antenna Tracking System Product Overview:

The MF18 is a high-precision UAV Antenna Tracking System (AAT) engineered for beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) missions and ultra-long-range unmanned aerial operations. This fully automatic directional antenna gimbal system continuously tracks the real-time position of airborne assets, ensuring that high-gain directional antennas maintain optimal alignment throughout the entire flight envelope — dramatically extending wireless link range and stability in professional drone, unmanned vehicle, and model aircraft applications.

MF18 Professional UAV Antenna Tracking System for BVLOS long-range drone operations

In ultra-long-range UAV system deployments, the use of high-gain directional antennas is essential to enhance wireless signal reception. However, the fundamental challenge is that higher antenna gain correlates with narrower lobe width, requiring precise real-time aiming as the aircraft maneuvers across the operational area. The MF18 UAV Antenna Tracking System solves this challenge through a fully automatic tracking gimbal that eliminates manual antenna pointing, delivering a productized, system-level solution when paired with the Maestro series HD image transmission system.

The MF18 is the critical range-extension component for Fixed-wing Platforms conducting corridor inspections, Multi-rotor Drones performing precision agriculture, and any mission requiring Long Range UAV Data Link connectivity. For command-and-control integration, pair with our UAV Control Station Terminal System, and for comprehensive fleet deployment, explore our UAV Industrial Solution services.

MF18 ultra-high integration system with multiple functional modules

UAV Antenna Tracking System Advanced System Architecture

1. Ultra-High Integration Design
The MF18 UAV Antenna Tracking System consolidates multiple functional modules into a single, highly integrated platform. This design philosophy meets the rigorous demands of batch deployment in ultra-long-range unmanned aerial vehicle operations, reducing system complexity, minimizing installation footprint, and ensuring consistent performance across multiple units in fleet applications. The integrated architecture eliminates the need for external protocol converters, separate WiFi access points, and additional power distribution components — streamlining both field installation and maintenance workflows.

2. Low-Latency Dual-Band WiFi Distribution
The MF18 features a robust dual-band WiFi distribution subsystem that transmits high-definition video streams and telemetry data to host computers with minimal latency. Through its integrated 2.4GHz/5.8GHz wireless component, operators receive real-time situational awareness without the cable constraints of traditional ground station setups. The system supports multiple streaming protocols to accommodate diverse ground station software requirements:

Telemetry Data: TCP or UDP transmission
Video Streams: TCP, UDP, or RTSP protocols

For users preferring wired connectivity, the standard Ethernet port on the gimbal base provides direct network access to drone data and video feeds — ensuring operational flexibility across varying field conditions and IT infrastructure constraints.

3. SBUS Forwarding and Range-Extending Module
The MF18 ATS integrates a remote control SBUS repeater module that extends command authority beyond the limitations of conventional radio links. By connecting the SBUS port of the remote control receiver to the SBUS port of the MF18 ATS, operators can pair the tracking system with the Maestro HD image transmission system to achieve remote control of both the aircraft and its payloads. This capability is essential for BVLOS missions where the aircraft operates beyond the direct radio horizon, ensuring that flight commands and payload control signals maintain reliable transmission through the directional high-gain antenna link.

4. High-Gain Directional Antenna System
The MF18 is equipped with a high-gain directional antenna engineered for maximum signal reception capability. The antenna system supports customization across different frequency bands to match specific operational requirements and regulatory environments. By concentrating RF energy in a focused beam directed at the airborne asset, the directional antenna effectively enhances both transmission distance and link stability — transforming marginal connectivity into robust, mission-capable communication channels that support HD video, telemetry, and control data simultaneously.

5. Fully Automatic 360° Tracking Gimbal
The precision tracking gimbal at the core of the MF18 UAV Antenna Tracking System delivers full 360-degree azimuth coverage with high-accuracy position tracking. The system parses Mavlink protocol data from the aircraft’s flight control system, extracting real-time longitude, latitude, and altitude information to calculate precise antenna pointing vectors. This closed-loop tracking ensures that the high-gain directional antenna maintains optimal alignment with the aircraft throughout all flight phases — from low-altitude takeoff to high-altitude cruise and approach patterns. For flight control systems transmitting non-standard data formats, custom protocol parsing solutions are available to ensure compatibility with proprietary or legacy telemetry streams.

System Integration Workflow of UAV Antenna Tracking System

The MF18 ATS operates in conjunction with the M52 ground unit and Pixhawk-based flight control systems through the following integrated workflow:

Flight Control Data Acquisition: The M52 ground unit receives Mavlink protocol telemetry from the aircraft’s flight control system
Protocol Parsing: Telemetry data is transmitted via UART1 to the MF18’s protocol parsing component for position extraction
Media Distribution: Real-time HD video and flight control data are transferred through the Ethernet port to the low-latency WiFi distribution component
Ground Station Access: Host computers (laptops, tablets, or UAV Control Station Terminal System devices) connect to the MF18 WiFi hotspot network
Mission Control: Operators open QGroundControl or Mission Planner software to receive video feeds, telemetry data, and command the aircraft through UDP/TCP/RTSP connections
